Quick Start

Read this article to help you get started with THORN quickly.

TIP

If you have not yet downloaded and installed THORN, please visit Download App

Account Registration & Login

THORN does not separate the registration and login process.

Once you open the app, simply enter your email address and click the button.

After a short wait, you will receive an email with a Sign-In Code, enter the 6-digit code and click on the Sign In button.

INFO

  • THORN uses only email + Real-Time Sign-In Code as the authentication method.
  • After logging in to the app, you will be automatically logged in every time you open the app for the next 30 days unless you actively log out.

DANGER

If you actively log out, THORN will clear your local login credentials, which will prevent you from using THORN when you do not have Internet access.

Therefore, please do not actively log out of THORN when you are offline.

Select Service Region

Upon first login, the application will guide you to select a Service Regoin.

We have deployed THORN data synchronization services in three service geographies - China, Asia Pacific and North America.

Choose a service region that is close to you for a better data synchronization experience.

TIP

  • THORN saves the current service region configuration as local storage on the current device and will automatically load the service region configuration when THORN is subsequently opened.
  • When logging in to use THORN on a new device, you will need to reselect the service region as there is no local service region configuration.

  • Service regions are independent of each other and data is isolated from each other, but THORN supports switching between service regions.

The First Workspace

When using THORN for the first time or switching to another service locale for the first time, you will need to create a workspace first.

Workspace

Users can create multiple workspaces in each service territory, and the data in each workspace is isolated from each other. We recommend that you create different workspaces for different writing scenarios, for example one for work and one for life.

Simply put, a workspace is a collection of Memos, Articles and Tags:


Memos: Similar to the rich text records created using System Memo.

Articles: Similar to documents created using Microsoft Word.

Tags: A nestable, multi-level tagging system for managing and organizing your Memos and Articles.


If you have read the official website, you may be interested in bidirectional links, which are used to create associations in the workspace for the entities of notes and articles, and are an alternative way to organize memos and articles.

WARNING

The Bidirectional Link feature is not yet available.

How Workspaces Affect Global Search?

Since the data in the workspace is isolated from each other, THORN's global search function will always be limited to the current workspace.


Okay, let's go ahead and click on the Create First Workspace For Initializing button in the center of the application and complete the creation of the workspace by adding the following information.

Each workspace can be set up with a different THORN data synchronization service. To be precise, there are only two options:

  • THORN data synchronization services maintained by the THORN team in the current service region
  • Your self-deployed THORN data synchronization service
When will the self-deployment of THORN data synchronization service be supported?

We will release the THORN data synchronization service when it is stable.


After the first workspace is created, you will see the Overview floating layer of the current space.

A brief overview of a few of the less obvious and important features of the Overview floating layer:

  • Toggle Text Tooltip:Click on the question mark bubble icon button in the bottom right corner of the Overview floating layer, and almost all buttons will have text alerts when text alerts are turned on
  • Switch Service Region:Click on the THORN/<Current Locale> button in the middle of the Overview floating layer
  • Check Updates:Click on the version number in the bottom right corner of the Overview floating layer
  • Data Synchronization Management:Click on the button in the lower left corner of the Overview floating layer

Finally, let's close the Overview floating layer by clicking on the leftmost button at the top of the application window to go to the list view of the application.

The First Memo

Follow the instructions in the image below to create your first memo: ::: details

How do I quit editing a memo?

When you are editing a memo, click on the external area of the memo to exit editing.

How do I enter the memo editing?

After selecting a memo.

  • Press the E key
  • Press the Space key
  • Press Enter
  • Click the edit icon on the right side of the toolbar below the memo.

Create memos using global shortcuts

macOS: Shift + Option + M

Windows: Shift + Alt + M

How do I open "Tutorials" in the app?

The First Article

Follow the instructions in the image below to create the first article:

You will go from the list view to the editing view, as follows:

How do I return to the list view?
  1. Click on the hot zone on the left side of the application
  2. Click on the button to the left of the plus button at the top

Basic article editing techniques

  1. Using Markdown syntax
  2. select the text to open the text style editing menu
  3. For most nodes, Command/Ctrl + Click to select the node to open the node menu
  4. open the command menu by typing / at the beginning of a paragraph, and continue typing for a fuzzy search of commands
  5. Type Space + / in the text to open the command menu, and continue typing to perform a fuzzy search for the command

Switching between article tabs

If you have more than one article open, they will be displayed as tabs in the top bar, and you can switch between tabs with the following shortcut keys.

next tab: Command/Ctrl + Tab

Previous tab: Command/Ctrl + Shift + Tab

Close tab: Command/Ctrl + W

Create articles using global shortcuts

macOS: Shift + Option + M

Windows: Shift + Alt + M

How do I open "Tutorials" in the app?

The connection between the accompanying memos and the articles

You can connect notes to an article and then each time you edit the article, you can see all the notes associated with the article.

TIP

With this feature, then you can use memos to write and record information, material, outline or ideas of a certain article.

Step 1: Open the Memos Search window

Step 2: Use the text search to find the note you want, select it, and click the Connect... button in the toolbar below the note

After completing the above steps, the note will be linked to the currently opened article.


Step 3: Click the button at the top of the Memos Search window to see all the memos linked to the currently edited article

Index, Information & Share

By clicking on the button in the highlighted area shown in the image below, you can view the index structure of the article, statistics and tagging information, as well as perform web sharing and file export.

However, there are some details that you should be aware of.

Index

  1. By clicking on the list item of the index, you can quickly jump through the articles
  2. By clicking on the icon to the right of the outline title, you can set the outline display level, such as the compact mode of the outline (only the title is displayed)

  1. Search and add tags by moving the mouse over the "Tags" heading

Share

  1. When sharing to the web is enabled, if the content is updated, you need to click the red icon button to the right of the "Share to web" title to resync the latest content to the sharing link
  2. You can also click the same red icon button on the left side of the bottom of the app to resync
  3. Once the sharing link is re-synced, the red icons in both locations will turn green
